Moving is considered one of the most stressful events that can occur in one’s life. However, as we and our home age, maintaining a house can become more of a challenge. Perhaps the idea of moving into an independent senior living community has been lingering in your mind.

CaraVita Village understands this thought, and we want to help you navigate your senior living journey. If you are visiting multiple communities, knowing what to look for is essential, so we want to provide you with a few tips to make sure you are getting the most out of your tours!

Know What’s Important to You

An independent living community is an opportunity for you to live the retirement you deserve, in an atmosphere that enriches your lifestyle and personal preferences. Before you visit a community, make a list of amenities and features that are important to you. Whether it’s a tennis court, laundry services, or a pet-friendly space, do your research before scheduling any visits. You don’t want to waste your time visiting an independent living community that doesn’t offer a service that is on your must-have list.

The Dining Experience

The beauty of an independent senior living community is that it allows you to maintain your independence while reaping the benefits of living in a community setting, and dining services are a significant benefit.

During your tour, make sure to make your way to the dining area. Look through the menu, ask about dietary and allergy restrictions, and if possible, grab yourself a plate and experience the dining firsthand!

Touring Outdoor Areas

While some independent senior living communities boast spacious outdoor areas, you should ensure they are well maintained and contain features that you would enjoy i.e., a garden, patio area, etc. A senior living community with a beautifully maintained outdoor area likely holds regular outdoor events for residents and their guests.

Socialization Opportunities

Another benefit of senior living communities is socialization and networking opportunities. While visiting, ask staff members what types of events or activities they hold to encourage this. Socialization is an important part of healthy aging, and a senior living community should be mindful of that and promote socialization for its residents.

Asking Questions and Trusting Your Instinct

If a question or concern arises during your visit, make sure to speak with one of the community’s staff members. The staff at these communities should be eager and willing to answer any questions you may have. You don’t want to leave a community visit without feeling confident that all your concerns have been addressed.

Trusting your instinct and overall feel of a community is a huge part of the decision-making process. While a community can seem perfect in many aspects, your instinct may be that it is not perfect for you. Moving to an independent senior living community is a big step, and you want to feel 100% comfortable with your decision.

If you’ve just begun touring independent senior living communities, CaraVita Village, in Montgomery, Alabama, is an all-inclusive resort-style community that is much like a cruise ship, that never leaves port! You can experience our community firsthand by scheduling a tour and free lunch!
