Health and proper nutrition are both critical at any age, but as we grow older, our bodies go through changes, making modifications to nutrient intake vital to remaining in good health.

Calcium 

The majority of calcium found in your body resides in your bones. But as you age, the calcium is drawn out of your bones. The problem with this is that calcium is needed for bone strength. When your body takes the calcium out of your bones, it causes them to become weak and brittle, leading to the development of osteoporosis. In addition, osteomalacia, the softening of bones, is an additional risk of a calcium deficiency.

Consuming foods and beverages rich in calcium, such as milk, yogurt, and beans, will help to keep your bones strong. 

Vitamin D

Vitamin D goes hand-in-hand with calcium. As mentioned above, if your body does not get enough calcium, it draws it out of your bones. Vitamin D is responsible for helping your body absorb calcium from the gut. This way, calcium remains in your bones.

Like calcium, vitamin D helps bone health and reduces the risk of osteoporosis. Your body naturally makes vitamin D when your skin is exposed to the sun; however, as you age, your skin and organs responsible for making vitamin D may not work as efficiently as they did previously. Furthermore, you may not get enough sun exposure that your body requires for this process. 

The solution for this could be a vitamin D supplement. We encourage you to talk to your doctor to ensure a vitamin D supplement is right for you.

Iron

Red blood cells are responsible for transporting oxygen throughout the body. Iron is a mineral that is found within these cells and is vital to their health. Without enough iron, red blood cells cannot function or operate properly. While we need less iron intake after the age of 50, the body does not absorb iron as effectively as we age, which can lead to an iron deficiency. 

An iron deficiency can increase the risk of developing anemia. Symptoms of anemia include fatigue, lightheadedness, dizziness, and shortness of breath.

If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important that you consult your doctor. Furthermore, you should actively choose foods that are rich in iron such as spinach, chicken, fish, ham and beans.

Vitamin B12

Like iron, vitamin B12 is essential for red blood cell health. This vitamin is also vital for healthy nerve function and creating DNA throughout your body. As we age, the body does not absorb vitamin B12 properly, so even if your diet is rich in vitamin B12, you could still not be getting enough.

Some people with insufficient vitamin B12 may have a higher risk of developing dementia.

Potassium 

As with calcium and vitamin D, potassium can help maintain bone health. In addition, this mineral is essential for proper cell function. Potassium has also been found to reduce the risk of kidney stones, and when you also minimize sodium intake, lower high blood pressure.

A diet that is high in fruits and vegetables is a great way to ensure you are consuming enough potassium. Talk to your doctor first if you are considering taking a potassium supplement. Too much potassium can be just as bad for your health as a potassium deficiency.

Healthy aging requires we pay extra attention to our health. Our bodies do not operate the same as they did when we were younger, and they absorb nutrients differently.
