3 Vacation Ideas for Retirees_ CaraVita Village

According to recent surveys, 70% of Americans want to travel more during their retirement, which isn’t a surprising statistic. We work hard throughout our lives, raise families, take care of loved ones; your retirement should be a time to focus on yourself. Not every trip or vacation needs to be extravagant or international, either!  Many of us live within driving distance of beautiful parks, monuments, or cities. CaraVita Village, an independent living community in Montgomery, Alabama, believes every retiree should enjoy every day of their retirement. We’re sharing a few vacation ideas that are perfect for retirees!

1. Cruise Line Adventures

There are a variety of cruises available for retirees, and it can prove to be a worthwhile adventure. Not only do most cruises feature multiple port stops where you can adventure in a new place, but the travel time to get there is full of relaxation. Plus, cruises are typically all-inclusive, allowing you to budget accordingly without the added expense of food or drink when you’re aboard the ship.

Popular cruise destinations include Alaska, the Caribbean, and Europe. Cruise lines are designed to be resorts at sea that include delicious meals, relaxing amenities like pools, spas, and massages, as well as a variety of onboard activities like entertainment and live music. And, because cruises are becoming a more popular retirement trip, many are directed solely towards retirees - offering exclusive deals and discounts to seniors and their families.

As with any decision, it’s important to do your research. You want to make sure you are choosing a cruise line that offers amenities that you will want to participate in, has an itinerary or port stops that spark your interest, and provides an experience in line with what you are expecting. For example, if you are hoping for a more peaceful, mature experience, a Disney cruise may not be the best choice since it will likely feature entertainment and amenities focused towards children or families.

2. Enjoy Nature

While a cruise vacation can introduce you to new and exotic destinations, there is nothing quite like enjoying the beauty and tranquility of nature. For this, you can try a traditional camping experience or a glamping trip getaway! Taking a vacation centered around nature is a great way to relax, unwind, and disconnect from screens and technology.

Spending time with nature is also great for one’s health. Research has found that exposure to trees and natural environments can:

  • Reduce feelings of stress
  • Boost immune system functionality
  • Improve sleep
  • Increase energy levels
  • Lower blood pressure

3. A Staycation Adventure

While a grand vacation is always desired, sometimes it isn’t possible - whether for financial, health, or other reasons. In those instances, consider opting in for a staycation or a vacation focused around destinations within driving distance of your home, so you do not have to worry about overnight accommodations. It’s like placing yourself in the shoes of a tourist new to your city and rediscovering what makes it unique and special! This can be perfect for a retiree; we can live someplace for most or all of our life without ever really experiencing it.

A staycation can spark or reignite a flame of pride for your city or town while introducing you to new parts of the area that you may have never experienced or even heard of before. The best part is that you don’t have to pack or plan an elaborate travel plan to reach your destination. Depending on where you live, this could involve a night out to a high-end restaurant, a relaxing day at a spa, or sightseeing local parks, landmarks, and attractions.

There are many options for a vacation after one retires, and retirement is the perfect time to begin crossing items off your bucket list. If you don’t already have a travel bucket list, make one!

  • Where do you want to travel?
  • How often do you want to travel? Once a month? Every six months?
  • Who do you want to travel with you? Children, spouse, friends?
